Long working hours at the desk can be painful, especially when you experience a sciatica flare-up. Sciatica is a common type of pain which affects the sciatic nerve. Symptoms can include burning pain, tingling or numbness on your lower back, legs or feet.
According to Payam Farjoodi, MD, an orthopedic spine surgeon, “Sitting places a large amount of stress on the discs between the vertebrae.” Additionally, “This can cause increased inflammation and aggravate an already compressed nerve.
It is important to keep moving as exercise is one of the most effective solutions for scatica pain. The introduction of a standing desk forces you to get off the chair and help allieviate symptoms of sciatica.
However, just as sitting down too much is bad, standing up for a prolonged period of time is not good either. The key to maximising the use of a standing desk is to ensure good posture while standing as well as stepping away from the desk every 20 minutes to stretch the muscles.
